new phone

After years of using Nokia phones I have now switched to Blackberry (or crackberry as some call it). It was out of necessity… a result of the old e50 hitting the floor one too many times. I have only had the Pearl for about a week and I can say I definitely think the interface is much better then Nokia’s Symbian operating system.

As an added bonus I installed flickr for blackberry and connected it to my photo page, google maps mobile (gmm) and the Chrono theme from Visto.

Art Basel / Design Miami part 2

I am now back in freezing Chicago from Miami. I am trying to gather up my thoughts to post a little more info. I have some photos you can view my photo page or at flickr. Also I am keeping track of interesting galleries and design studios I encountered using google maps. You can see it here: map

One of my favorite exhibitions was Fragiles curated by Die-Gestalten Verlag. I have to thank Mike and Maia for taking me to this one. The $28,000 AK-47 chandler by Hans van Bentem was amazing (his website is cool too). Also cute little porcelain creations from Lola Goldstein.

On the last day I made it to the Miami Convention center. It was totally overwhelming and huge. I was really into a piece by artist Arcangelo Sassolino presented by Von Senger. It is a hydraulic-concrete-scraping robot or something. I found this video actually taken at the Art Basel Miami Beach convention center this past weekend.

Of course one of my favorites was the Artek pavilion positioned in an empty lot in the Design District. Back in my Copenhagen days I spent time studying Artek and even visited their flagship store in Helsinki Finland. So it was especially interesting to see the Artek: Sustainability as an Attitude exhibition. The entire structure was constructed from the UPM-developed wood-plastic composite.

Everyday I ride my bike by the corner of Morgan and Randolph on my way to work. I noticed that there was this nice corner storefront that has been under construction for a few weeks. But today I finally saw what it will be…. another Starbucks :/ what a waste! there is already one about 2 blocks down on the corner of Madison and Morgan Why can’t there be a cool and hip independent coffee shop there instead?

Just this week there has been talk in the the business world about Starbucks reporting first ever traffic drop. I wonder why this is? Maybe because they have hit the point of saturation? Maybe because all the stores are the same and they are boring… or maybe because their coffee sucks!! (I know that last statement might be a point of contention but really I hate their coffee)

Eric Karjaluoto at IdeasOnIdeas already saw this coming back in July when he wrote up this blog post on the Starbucks Growth Paradox.

For the past fews years I have had a been trying to avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). (I am sure I will eventually write more posts on this subject). When I mention this to people they seem kind of perplexed. Usually they are vaguely aware of what HFCS is if they have heard of it at all. This is why when I heard the documentary King Korn was playing in Chicago at Facets I was pretty excited.

I recently picked up cast aluminum grill pan from Colombian company Imusa for $12.99 at a Los Cuatro Caminos grocery in Logan Square. It is a basic pan with solid construction and nice form.
